"Smitty"

Hustle Pioneer, “Smitty”, was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and moved to New Jersey when he was 6 years old. Growing up, he became interested in art, graffiti art to be specific. Later on, influenced and inspired by the emerging breakdance scene, he became the lead artist for a breakdance crew. Soon after, he was regularly challenged to battle by rival crews. He found great success as a breakdancer and it became a major passion of his. The passion led him to a NJ club named “Joey’s”.  Every Sunday, the break dancers would dance starting at 10:30 PM but before that, the hustle dancers had the floor. Often however, the hustlers would stay longer, which was somewhat upsetting as they had their time. However, the more he watched them dance, he proclaimed “I can do that dance”. At first, he was not great at this new dance, but with practice and perseverance, a new passion was born. He became a true lover of the Hustle.

Over time, he learned other dances like Cha-Cha, Mambo, Rhumba, and Tango, and became one of the premier teachers at Continental Studios in New Jersey. Today, Smitty works as an MC/dancer for one of New Jersey’s Premier entertainment companies. Hustle is Smitty’s passion and he continues to dance and teach whenever he can.

Marilyn Velez

Marilyn grew up in a musically gifted family, with her Dad & other relatives, playing many different instruments. To no surprise, she felt a passion for music & dance at a very early age. She credits many years of Ballet, Tap & Jazz both as a kid and now as an adult, for making her a good dancer…and a joyous one at that.

When first introduced to Hustle, she was intrigued & felt a strong will to learn it. Marilyn immediately fell in love with Hustle and through determination, passion & practice, learn it she did!

25+ years later, she still finds the most joy dancing Hustle. Currently, she teaches a beginner Hustle class with her partner Smitty and finds joy in sharing her Hustle passion. Marilyn hopes to help keep Hustle alive & growing amongst the next generation of Hustle dancers.

Sal Rentas

a native of the Island of Manhattan, NYC, has been deeply influenced by the vibrant music and rhythm of his upbringing. His mother, hailing from the Dominican Republic, instilled in him a love for patterns and footwork on the fly, teaching him frequently with some of her fav songs that played on Spanish radio. This early exposure to dance was further enriched by his older brother, an exceptional musician, and his father from Puerto Rican, businessman/singer and had a small record label.

During his grammar school years, Sal’s passion for dance & skating began to overshadow his love for basketball. He immersed himself in the music and movements of iconic artists like James Brown and Michael Jackson. It was during this time that Sal had his first Hustle Dance lesson,  by Mongo Santamaría’s niece, on the sidelines of his school’s basketball court. In high school, his dedication to music and dance grew as he collected music, DJ-ed, danced, skated and continued to refine his skills. Sal attended Hustle dance lessons at Fred Astaire Dance Studios, and in college, he had the incredible opportunity to study tap dance under the tutelage of Gene Kelly’s brother for two years. Fueling his passion, Sal sought out various dance styles, taking lessons from numerous dance schools across the city.

As the years progressed, Sal became part of productions, shows and videos, realizing that he had become a true product of his environment—an environment teeming with dance legends, musical icons, and in NYC the birthplace of various dance genres. Sal considers himself profoundly blessed to have been immersed in such a vibrant dance music culture, from the origins of “The Hustle” to the present day.
